A Curriculum for the Future

Through the Pearson Edexcel International Curriculum, Hawassa International School is preparing students not only for exams—but for life. By combining academic excellence with creativity, curiosity, and character, our students are equipped to lead, innovate, and make a positive impact in Ethiopia and beyond.

Our Foundation Stage

At Hawassa International School, our Foundation Stage (FS1 and FS2) provides young learners with a nurturing, play-based, and purposeful start to their educational journey. We follow the Pearson Edexcel Early Years programme, which is internationally recognised for promoting holistic development and laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

Our approach is centred on the belief that every child is unique, and our curriculum is carefully designed to support each child’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Through a blend of structured play, hands-on discovery, and meaningful interaction, we foster curiosity, independence, and a love of learning from the very beginning.

Areas of Learning

The Pearson Edexcel Early Years curriculum is built around six key areas of learning and development, which together provide a well-rounded educational experience:

  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Creative expression
  • Mathematics
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Understanding the world

Children are assessed against key milestones continuously through observations and evidence gathering, providing a developmental snapshot of their progress, which is regularly shared with families.

A Child-Centred, Play-Based Approach

At Hawassa International School, we view play not just as an activity, but as a powerful learning tool. Our child-centred pedagogy encourages exploration, experimentation, and active engagement with the world around them. Teachers serve as skilled facilitators—supporting, guiding, and extending learning through rich, meaningful experiences.

Our classrooms and outdoor spaces are thoughtfully arranged to stimulate imagination, build fine and gross motor skills, and encourage collaboration and communication. Whether constructing with blocks, engaging in role play, listening to stories, or exploring nature, our young learners are developing essential foundations for future academic success and personal growth.

Relationships and Wellbeing

Positive relationships are at the heart of our Foundation Stage. We work closely with families to build trust and ensure each child feels safe, valued, and understood. Our educators foster a warm, inclusive environment where children develop self-confidence, empathy, and emotional resilience.

We recognise that a child’s earliest school experiences shape their attitudes toward learning for years to come. That’s why the Foundation Stage at Hawassa International School is not only about early academics—it is about developing the whole child, preparing them emotionally and socially for the transition to primary school.

At Hawassa International School, the Foundation Stage is where our students begin to discover who they are as learners. With the Pearson Edexcel Early Years framework, a nurturing team of educators, and an environment rich in wonder and opportunity, we ensure every child gets the strongest start possible.

We welcome all who share our values of excellence, inclusion, integrity, and care. Together, we are not only educating students—we are shaping the future of our city, our country, and our world.

Sport

At Hawassa International School, sport is a core part of our approach to developing the whole child. We believe that physical education is essential not only for physical health, but also for nurturing social, emotional, and academic growth. Aligned with the Pearson Edexcel International Curriculum’s emphasis on wellbeing and personal development, our sports programme offers students a wide range of opportunities to be active, build confidence, and thrive.

A Balanced Approach to Physical Education

Our students participate in a variety of team and individual sports, designed to accommodate different interests, abilities, and skill levels. From football and basketball to track and field and gymnastics, students are encouraged to discover activities they enjoy while learning the value of discipline, teamwork, and healthy competition.

We view sport as more than just physical activity. It is a platform for teaching essential life skills such as:

  • Teamwork and communication
  • Leadership and resilience
  • Goal setting and perseverance
  • Fair play and respect for others

Through regular physical education classes and co-curricular sports activities, our students develop self-confidence, build strong peer relationships, and cultivate a positive sense of identity.

Health, Wellbeing, and Academic Success

The benefits of physical activity extend far beyond the playing field. Research consistently shows that regular sport and exercise are linked to:

  • Improved concentration and memory
  • Reduced symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Better overall physical health and immunity
  • Higher motivation and academic engagement

At Hawassa International School, we integrate sport into our educational philosophy because we know that a healthy body supports a healthy mind. Physical education is not just an add-on—it is part of a balanced and meaningful school experience.

Extra-Curricular Activities

At Hawassa International School, education doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We are committed to nurturing the whole child, and that means providing a rich and varied programme of extra-curricular activities that support students’ personal growth, creativity, wellbeing, and sense of community.

Extra-curricular learning at Hawassa International School includes everything from sports teams, music ensembles, and visual arts, to debate clubs, drama productions, coding workshops, community service projects, and more. These experiences give students the opportunity to explore their interests and passions, discover new talents, and build confidence in themselves as learners, leaders, and collaborators.

Building Skills for Life

While not part of the formal academic curriculum, extra-curricular activities play a vital role in helping students develop the essential life skills needed for success in the 21st century. Whether working on a group project, rehearsing for a performance, or volunteering in the community, students gain:

  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Empathy and social responsibility
  • Creative expression and innovation
  • Time management and resilience

These experiences complement the Pearson Edexcel International Curriculum’s emphasis on independence, enquiry, and holistic development—and they prepare students not just for exams, but for life.

A Stronger School Community

Participation in extra-curricular activities also helps students feel a deeper sense of belonging and connection to the school. These opportunities foster friendships across year groups, strengthen relationships with teachers, and contribute to a vibrant and inclusive school culture.

We actively encourage all students to get involved—regardless of experience or ability—and we provide a variety of options to suit diverse interests. As our school grows, so too will the range of clubs, teams, and activities available to our learners.

Future-Focused and Globally Recognised

Engaging in extra-curricular programmes not only enriches students’ daily lives, but also enhances their future opportunities. Universities and employers increasingly seek individuals who are well-rounded, motivated, and community-minded—qualities that are cultivated through involvement in leadership roles, creative pursuits, and service learning.

At Hawassa International School, extra-curricular learning is not optional—it is essential. It is how we inspire our students to think boldly, act kindly, and lead confidently, within school and far beyond it.

School Trips

At Hawassa International School, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning takes place beyond the classroom walls. We are committed to offering a wide range of school trips and educational excursions that enrich the curriculum, broaden horizons, and bring learning to life.

Our trips are carefully planned to complement the Pearson Edexcel International Curriculum, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world contexts—whether exploring the natural environment, engaging with Ethiopia’s rich history and culture, or experiencing new perspectives abroad.

Learning Through Experience

From local day trips to museums, markets, farms, and science centres, to overnight residentials and international expeditions, school trips offer students valuable opportunities to:

  • Explore real-world applications of classroom topics
  • Gain practical skills and hands-on experience
  • Deepen cultural understanding and appreciation
  • Engage with their community and environment in new ways

Imagine history students exploring local heritage sites or science students visiting a conservation project by Lake Hawassa—these experiences help make abstract concepts tangible and unforgettable.

Social, Emotional, and Personal Growth

Beyond academics, school trips are powerful tools for developing independence, confidence, and social skills. As students navigate new settings and challenges together, they:

  • Strengthen friendships and build trust
  • Develop teamwork, leadership, and resilience
  • Learn to adapt and thrive in unfamiliar environments
  • Gain a sense of responsibility and self-awareness

Trips also allow students to connect with teachers and peers in new ways, fostering a stronger sense of community and belonging.

Wellbeing, Motivation, and Fun

Above all, school trips are memorable, enjoyable experiences that spark curiosity, creativity, and joy. They offer a refreshing break from the regular school routine and support student wellbeing by promoting balance, adventure, and engagement.

Whether hiking through Ethiopia’s natural landscapes, visiting cultural festivals, or attending a leadership camp, these experiences stay with students long after they return to school.

Accessible and Inclusive

At Hawassa International School, we are committed to making school trips inclusive and accessible to all students. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore, discover, and grow through educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

School trips at Hawassa International School are not just an addition to the curriculum—they are an integral part of how we nurture global citisens, develop confident learners, and inspire lifelong curiosity.

We’re currently accepting applications from FS1 to Year 6, with higher levels opening annually.

We welcome Ethiopian, international, and diaspora families. Our admissions process is fair and inclusive, with readiness assessments—not entrance exams.
