Admissions

Open to All

We invite applications from Ethiopian nationals, expatriate families, and returning diaspora. Our doors are open to every child with the curiosity to learn and the potential to grow—regardless of academic history or language background.

Families are warmly encouraged to visit the school, meet our team, and explore the campus before making a decision to register.

Our Admissions Principles

At Hawassa International School, our admissions approach is guided by three core principles:

Inclusivity: We welcome all learners, including those with mild to moderate learning difficulties and special educational needs (SEN), and we offer targeted support to help them thrive.

Accessibility: No student is denied admission on the basis of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or epilepsy. We provide appropriate medical and pastoral support as required.

Equity: We evaluate every applicant on their individual needs, not predetermined criteria.

School Readiness

We understand that not all children begin school at the same level of readiness. Our Early Years programme (FS1–FS2) follows Pearson Edexcel Early Years, offering a play-based programme with a holistic curriculum that helps  to identify and support developmental needs early on.

We define school readiness as a combination of:

Language and literacy skills

Thinking and problem-solving abilities

Emotional self-regulation and independence

Confidence in engaging with peers and adults

Parents play an essential role in preparing their child for this journey, and we work in close partnership with families to support a smooth transition into school life.

Admissions Process

At Hawassa International School, we believe every child deserves access to a world-class education. Our admissions process is fair, transparent, and inclusive—welcoming students from all backgrounds without discrimination based on academic ability, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or health status.

Hawassa International School proudly follows the British Curriculum, offering the Pearson Edexcel International Curriculum from Early Years through to A Levels. We are currently accepting applications for FS1 through to Year 6, with new year levels opening annually as the school grows.

School Readiness Assessment

All children applying to Hawassa International School will participate in a School Readiness Assessment led by our academic and learning support teams. This informal process helps us understand:

The child’s level of English (as many will speak English as an additional language)

Their ability to engage socially and emotionally in a classroom setting

Any early indicators of learning needs or developmental support requirements

For students in FS1 and FS2, no formal testing is required. Our goal is to ensure a strong foundation for learning, not to create barriers to entry.

Admission of Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

We are committed to offering an inclusive educational experience that supports equality of opportunity. Hawassa International School welcomes students with a wide range of mild to moderate SEN, providing the school can meet their needs through appropriate support and accommodations.

If a child presents with identified learning needs, we may request additional information or conduct a school-based assessment—not for the purpose of exclusion, but to ensure we can deliver the support they require. In rare cases where we are unable to fully meet a child’s needs, we will discuss this openly with families and recommend alternative options in the child’s best interest.
